Website Checklist: speed

Back to index

Evaluate your commercial website and be successful.

For your website to be successful you must know who your intended website audience is, what the goal of your web site is, and how the attainment of that goal will be measured. Without this knowledge, it will be hard to achieve success.

Speed

Speed Rules
On the web it is my opinion that speed rules. There is allot of competition for peoples attention these days. Waiting more then a second or two for a page is enough for some people to go elsewhere. Most pages of your site should not take any longer then a second or three to load. This is especially true for the first pages a visitor is likely to visit.

Image size
Again, related to speed images should be as light weight as possible and every image should be circumspect. Does the image really contribute the goal of the site? Could the image be replaced with some CSS styling?

Cache control
Take control of the caching behavior of your site. Web crawlers can place a load on your site use respond to "if modified since" request with 304 headers for content that hasn't changed.
